Buying Ishmael in BulkQ. Can I buy copies of Ishmael in bulk (at a discount)?A. Unfortunately, we've been unable to find any avenue by which this can be done. There was a time when the publisher, Bantam Books, would sell in bulk directly to the public, but now that they're part of Random House, they no longer do this. A book distributor (Ingram, for example) will only open accounts with entities that are going to be buying in retail bookstore quantities--not a hundred copies of a single title but rather hundreds of copies of many bestsellers and five or ten copies of thousands of other books. The best deal we can find is at Amazon, which offers copies at a 30% discount and free shipping on orders of $25 or more (as of this writing, September 18, 2002). Q. As the author, can't you buy copies at a discount? A. Yes, but (by contract) not for resale. Q. Why is it that you offer My Ishmael in bulk but not Ishmael? A. When the publisher put the hardcover edition of My Ishmael out of print, we bought all the stock they still had on hand. We have plenty of copies of this edition, and so can offer it in bulk. Q. You offer the Fifth Anniversary (hardcover) edition of Ishmael in single copies. Why not in bulk? A. Again, when the publisher put this edition out of print, we bought all the stock they still had on hand--and for a while we had enough to sell it in bulk. We wish we had thousands more, but unfortunately we have only a few left, and so can only sell single copies of this edition. Q. Couldn't the publisher (or you) produce a cheaper, mass-market paperback edition of Ishmael? A. The publisher could but doesn't want to. We'd be delighted to publish such an edition ourselves but this would violate my contract with the publisher.
