A message from Daniel Quinn about
Food Production
and
Population Growth
"I consider these videotapes equal in importance
to all my books combined.
"In recent years, I've addressed students and faculty at Kent State
University, the University of Texas, Trinity University, Portland State University, Roger Williams University, Virginia Tech, Salisbury State University, Elon College, Baylor University, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon University, and Rice University--among others--and I've learned that no issue raises more questions or more passionate concern in these audiences than the issue of human population.
"It has been my greatest frustration during this period that at every venue
where questions about population have been raised, I've been forced by time limitations to leave more questions unanswered than answered. The result has been confusion, irritation, and gloom. Henceforth, every question and answer session will begin with the announcement that I will take no questions about population. People with questions about population will be referred to these videos.
"Nothing threatens the future of the world more than the uncontrolled growth of our species.
"But public discussion of this fact--even among scientists--is profoundly
obscured by a cultural mythology that portrays humanity as supremely above and
exempt from the biological forces that govern the rest of the community of
life on this planet. This constantly repeated and confirmed mythology invariably
guides population discourse to a well-worn set of 'solutions' that year after
year and decade after decade never in fact solve anything. In creating this
video program, biologist Alan D. Thornhill and I have cut through the
mythology to expose the systemic factors that govern ALL population dynamics--including our own.
"Population stability can only be achieved if we ignore mythology and pay
attention to reality. This videocassette program is designed to provide an
introduction to that reality."
